South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Namibia’s President, Hage Geingob. Geingob passed away in the early hours of Sunday after battling cancer.
The 82-year-old’s death was announced in a statement by Namibia’s acting president, Nangolo Mbumba.
In response to this tragic news, President Ramaphosa expressed his condolences in a heartfelt post on his X account, stating, “Today, South Africa joins the people of our sister state Namibia in mourning the passing of a leader, patriot, and friend of South Africa.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Geingob family and the people of Namibia who have lost an outstanding leader in a year in which Namibia, like South Africa, is due to hold elections.”
Ramaphosa also reflected on his recent visit to Namibia in October 2023, where he was hosted by President Geingob, Madame Geingos, and the Cabinet on a Working Visit.
He described President Geingob as a towering veteran of Namibia’s liberation from colonialism and apartheid, as well as a significant figure in the solidarity between Namibia and South Africa during their respective struggles for freedom.
The South African President concluded his message with appreciation for President Geingob’s contributions and expressed sadness at the loss of a comrade in the struggle and a close partner in their democratic journey. He wished for Geingob’s soul to rest in peace.
