Stephanie Linus has revealed to Pulse Nigeria where the concept of her film “Dry” came from.
Linus said she had heard about Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) while she was in her second year at the University of Calabar. She said a friend of hers from University of Jos told her stories of this medical condition years ago.
“The thought never left me and the more I researched about it, the more I felt I needed to say something”, she said at the screening of her movie at Nolly Thursdays at Genesis Deluxe Cinemas on Thursday, March 10, 2016.
“Growing as a young girl in the industry, every time I turned around, somehow fistula is always finding me so I felt this is something I needed to tell and I approached a several NGOs and travelled to several countries.
“I felt as a film maker this was a way of opening up a conversation.”
“Dry” premiered in Lagos, Nigeria on August 3, 2015. It explores the experiences of a young girl forced to be a child bride who eventually suffers from VVF.
The actress’ self directed film “Dry” was named Best Overall Movie Africa at the Africa magic Viewers Choice Awards in Lagos on Saturday, March 5.
Inspired by a true story, the movie features Darwin Shaw as Dr. Alex, the legendary Liz Benson Ameye as the Matron and Bill McNamara as Dr. Brown. It also stars also stars acting newbie Zubaida Ibrahim as Halima who was only 12 years old at the time she took on the role.
