Ryan Giggs has an “outstanding chance” to be Manchester United manager in the future, according to Stoke City boss Mark Hughes, as uncertainty surrounds Louis van Gaal’s coaching position.
United assistant manager Giggs has been eyed to replace under-pressure boss Van Gaal, whose United side have lost their last three Premier League matches.
Former Old Trafford midfielder Giggs, who made 802 starts for the club in all competitions, took charge of the team at the end of last season following the departure of David Moyes.
Giggs won two of his four matches as boss, and ex-United striker Hughes, whose Stoke host the Red Devils on Boxing Day, said: “Given his playing career, you would say he’s got an outstanding chance.
“His ability as a manager is not clear yet — we don’t know because he’s not had the opportunity yet.
“He’s getting an education now. He had it obviously being around Sir Alex Ferguson for so many years, and now he’s assistant manager.”
Hughes also said he does not expect Van Gaal’s reputation to save him if his United side continue to underperform.
