Human rights lawyer Pius Danba is worried that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) won’t schedule a bye election in the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency in Taraba State soon.
He thought it was high time for a drill like this.
Danba made his position apparent in a letter to the INEC Chairman on Tuesday, in which he asserted that the commission had violated the law by allowing the election for a replacement to run more than 30 days.

InfoStride News reports that the seat for the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency has been vacant since the death of election winner Ismaila Yushau Mohammed on February 25.
He was baffled by INEC’s delay, so he mused, “It will interest you to know that from the 22nd day of April, 2023 to the 13th June,2023 is 52 days.”
Since Ismaila Yushau Mohammed’s death on June 13, 2023, the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency has been without a representative in the House of Representatives.
In violation of Section 76 (1) (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), “the people of Jalingo/Yorro/Zing are not represented at all for more than 118 days and counting.”
He further pointed out that Section 34 (3) (b) of the Electoral Act of 2022 only allows for a 21-day extension after a candidate’s death.
The prominent lawyer claimed the Commission had erred in placing so much emphasis on the governorship contests in Bayelsa and Kogi.
The candidate for the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency said, “it appears that your commission does not consider the election of Jalingo/Yorro/Zing to be an equally important constitutional activity at all.”
