The Supreme Court of Nigeria has upheld the victory of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor of Lagos State, dismissing the appeal filed by the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour. Justice Garba Lawal, who delivered the lead judgment, affirmed Sanwo-Olu’s election win.
Sanwo-Olu had urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the appeals challenging his victory in the February 25 governorship election. The appeals were filed by Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Abdulazeez Adediran.
The Labour Party had argued that the March 18 election was marred by irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, also questioning the eligibility of Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat to contest the election.

Meanwhile, Adediran had filed 34 grounds of appeal seeking to overturn the judgments of the Lagos State Governorship Election Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.
In response, counsel to Sanwo-Olu, Nas Ogunsakin, informed the court that the appellants failed to present sufficient evidence to support their claims and that the witnesses they brought forward were incompetent.
With this decision by the Supreme Court, Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the Lagos State governorship election stands affirmed, bringing an end to the legal challenges against his election.
