Bauchi (SURE-P Report) – The Convener on SURE-P Road and Bridges, Kassim Bataiya has mandated the contactors handling the dualisation and rehabilitation of Kano – Maiduguri Road, Kano – Yobe and Abuja – Lokoja Road to ensure that they finish their work as stipulated in the contract awards.
He made the statement while inspecting the construction work on the Ningi – Yadagungume Fuskar Mata Road in Bauchi, saying SURE-P has made available the sum of 1.5bln for the construction of four bridges and further extension of the construction work on the road. He also mandated the contractor handling the rehabilitation of the road to commence the construction of the four bridges which was not included in the initial contract as SURE-P has earmarked the sum of 1.5bln for the project.
He expressed fulfillment with the progress of work executed by all the contactors on the Kano – Maduguri Road from Kano to Damaturu; noting that the Kano – Maiduguri dualisation project is sub-divided into five sections.
Also speaking, the Project Manager of Dantata Edwin Meijlink observed that improved budgetary funding and timely payment of certified works will encourage contractors to work speedily towards completion. On his part, the Engineering Representative of Dantata and Sawoe Construction Nigeria Limited, Sidney Morka revealed that the security situation has greatly improved over a time, but there is still apprehension on the side of the contractor’s expatriate staff.
The Project Manager of CGC NIG Limited, Wen Hai Ming explained that the insecurity pervading the North – East is heavily affecting the project because many key workers are running away from the area. He added that the security situation has tremendously improved in recent time, but anonymous letters of threats have been received by key workers of the contractor, scaring them from the area.
In another development, the Director of the Project Implementation Unit, Mayen Adetigba was elated over the construction work on the Abuja-Lokoja Road, indicating that the road from Abuja to Lokoja is the main link between the Federal Capital and most Southern States of the federation. “The construction of Kano – Maiduguri Road is of great importance to the development of this country, especially as a Trans-Saharan route. Its contribution to trade and industry in Africa cannot be overestimated,” she said.
