A suspected vandal was electrocuted while attempting to steal components from a 500KVA transformer substation located on Baba Abiye Street in Ede, Osun State.
The incident, which occurred late Wednesday, was confirmed in a statement issued Saturday by Kikelomo Owoeye, the Regional Communication and Branding Officer of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc (IBEDC), Osun Region.
According to the statement, the severely injured suspect was discovered beside the transformer early Thursday morning by a concerned resident.
“The suspected vandal was electrocuted during the act and was later discovered by a concerned resident the following morning,” Owoeye said.
Police officers promptly evacuated the suspect to Alpha Hospital, while another individual, believed to be an accomplice, was apprehended and remains in custody.
IBEDC condemned the act of vandalism, warning that such criminal behavior not only endangers lives but also disrupts power supply and compromises public safety.
“Vandalism poses grave risks to lives, undermines public safety, and disrupts power supply to communities,” the statement read.
The company praised the vigilance and swift response of local residents and encouraged the public to remain alert and proactive.
“We commend the vigilance and prompt action of the local residents and urge the public to remain alert,” Owoeye stated.
IBEDC also urged the public to report any suspicious activity, including energy theft and equipment tampering, through its official reporting channels.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its infrastructure and ensuring consistent electricity supply across its operational areas.
