The European Union (EU) has stated that it will invest an additional €5.4 million euros in strengthening the teaching capabilities of educators in the Northwest region.
This is in accordance with its commitment to empowering young people in the region and lowering the high number of children in the region who are not enrolled in school. This will be accomplished by increasing access to education of a higher standard.
At the official launch of the €40 million intervention plan on education and youth development in North Western Nigeria through the Global Gateway initiative, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen made the announcement in Abuja. The programme is being funded by the Global Gateway initiative.

She revealed the purpose of the increased funding, which was to ensure that instructors receive the necessary and upgraded skills and learning necessary to foster pupils who are equipped with the requisite information to become an army of solutions to the various difficulties that are affecting Nigeria and the continent in general.
The EU Commissioner stated that “actually, this component is complemented by a separate programme that we signed today, which is dedicated to teachers for the aim of building their resilience and capacity in challenging environments.” The plan is dedicated to teachers for the aim of building their resilience and capacity in challenging environments. It is imperative that we keep in mind that there can be no education without instructors, which is why we must also make investments in the professional development of educators.
“The third purpose of our program is basically that it equips young people with the tools they need to become independent, by providing vocational education as well as encouraging behavioral change campaigns to fight negative social conventions and empower girls.
Urpilainen also mentioned that the European Union was planning to provide vocational education and training for young people in Nigeria in order to provide them the tools they need to be successful in the job market.
She made the following statement: “This ambitious program that was launched today was designed with Nigerian authorities to ensure ownership and an adequate response to the needs of the local community.” Through this particular program, the European Union (EU) is not only aiming to reach out to the young people, but it is also giving them more control over the direction of the program. Because of this, the EU established the Youth Sounding Board not only in Nigeria but also in many other countries to ensure that the work that it does is not only for the young people but also carried out by the young people themselves.
“We need to include young people in the decision-making process. We need to create spaces and structures where young people feel that they are visible and they watch this, and this is exactly what the European Union is doing,” said one of the speakers at the conference.
Urpilainen, while noting that Nigeria was not only the economic powerhouse on the continent but also the most populous country in Africa, described education as the most transformative sector with the ability to change the fortunes of a country. This was said despite the fact that Nigeria was not only the most populous country in Africa but also a strategic partner of the EU in the West region.
She went on to explain that the program’s primary focus would be on removing children who were not enrolled in school from the streets in order to provide them with the necessary education, particularly for girls. This would be accomplished through a variety of components that all had the same end goal in mind: providing access to excellent education and fostering youth empowerment.
She made the following statement: “Education is the most transformative sector in which we can invest, and it is the cornerstone for creating resilient societies and finding solutions to the most pressing challenges of our time.”
“Therefore, the investment that the EU is making on access, skills, and quality education as well as youth empowerment in Northwestern Nigeria actually brings together all of these various components.” It is going to be stationed in the Northwestern region of Nigeria.
“The program that we are establishing today will encourage access to education for children who are not already enrolled in school, with a particular emphasis on enrolling and retaining girls in educational institutions. Additionally included are financial gifts, cash transfers, social protection, income generation, direct aid to families in the form of cash, and gifts, as well as indirect assistance in the form of agricultural activities. To ensure that no child in Nigeria is disadvantaged, I believe it is critical that we be able to make it possible for them all to participate in educational opportunities.
“One more thing we want to speak about, and one of the overarching goals of our program, is that it actually supports validated teaching and learning in the schools that are being targeted. As a result, it will promote child-centered medical care, sexual and reproductive health, training on racial and gender equality, and community-based and state-level capacity to deliver education.
Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, speaking on behalf of the Northwestern states, expressed gratitude to the European Union for assisting the region in combating the problem of children who were not in school. He also stated that the Northwestern states were dedicated to making education a priority in their own states and had made the decision to invest heavily in the education sector.
According to him, “the Northwestern states have the highest population in the country, and we are more disadvantaged when it comes to education. This support is arriving at the right time, however, because it comes at the right time.”
“Education is a top priority for each of us, and we have come to the conclusion as a group and as individuals that we will make investments in education. We are prepared to alter the course of events over the next four years.”
“The timing of this support could not be better, and I can guarantee you that it will go a great way toward assisting us in our efforts to modernize the educational systems in each of our states. This intervention will be utilized in the most effective manner possible, and I can guarantee you that the results will be something to be commended for their contribution to the enhancement of our educational system as well as other aspects of societal development.
On the other hand, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, issued a stern warning that any attempt to minimize the significance of education will result in astronomical expenses for the nation in terms of both welfare and security.
We are gambling with the future of the nation if we do not invest in our young people by providing them with adequate support, education, and opportunities. If they aren’t taken into account, it could lead to increased levels of poverty and instability.
“Our focus is turning to basic education, children who are not currently enrolled in school, and adolescent girls who require training and empowerment.
“Our government is ready to commit 25% of the budget to education,” said the Vice President, “all the President needs according to him are policies that will justify that budget, and that is what we are working on.”
