Infostride News reports that Saudi Arabia has secured the second position among G20 nations in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ICT) 2023 index, solidifying its status as a burgeoning technology hub poised to attract foreign talent.
In the latest update from the ICT Index, Saudi Arabia achieved an impressive score of 94.9 points, demonstrating a significant advancement of 10 positions from the previous year. This notable achievement also surpassed the global average of 72.8, showcasing the Kingdom’s commitment to technological progress.
The top spot in the ICT Development Index among G20 nations was claimed by the United States, with a score of 96.6 points. Noteworthy is the fact that Saudi Arabia outperformed other G20 peers such as the UK and Japan, securing 92.8 and 92 points, respectively.
The ICT Development Index is a comprehensive evaluation of 169 economies, focusing on two crucial pillars: “universal connectivity” and “meaningful connectivity.” It takes into account factors like the provision of high-quality infrastructure and the assurance of secure internet access for all.
In response to this achievement, the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission of Saudi Arabia emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to enhancing its ICT infrastructure and services. This dedication is strategically aligned with the goal of driving economic growth and creating opportunities. The report highlights the Saudi ICT market as the largest and most rapidly expanding in the Middle East and North Africa region.
According to the official statement from CITC (Communications and Information Technology Commission), “The IDI reflects Saudi Arabia’s strong ICT infrastructure and the affordable and reliable services, which directly contribute to the development of the national digital economy, attract investment, and increase the size of the Saudi ICT market.”
CITC further noted that the ICT sector in Saudi Arabia is steadily advancing in line with the objectives outlined in Vision 2030, a strategic framework aimed at positioning the Kingdom as a global technology hub.
One of the key indicators of Saudi Arabia’s progress in the ICT sector is the impressive 99% internet penetration rate. Cumulative investments in the sector have reached a substantial SR93 billion ($24.79 billion) over the past six years, underlining the Kingdom’s significant financial commitment to fostering technological advancements. Since 2016, Saudi Arabia has been actively implementing a well-established digitization initiative known as the National Strategy for Digital Transformation.
The National Strategy for Digital Transformation reflects the Kingdom’s forward-looking approach to harnessing the power of digital technologies for economic development and societal progress. It encompasses initiatives to enhance digital infrastructure, promote e-government services, and facilitate the growth of the digital economy.
Saudi Arabia’s ICT achievements align with its broader Vision 2030 goals, which include diversifying the economy, reducing dependence on oil, and fostering innovation and technology. The emphasis on universal and meaningful connectivity underscores the commitment to ensuring that the benefits of technology are accessible to all segments of society.
The robust growth of the Saudi ICT market not only positions the Kingdom as a regional leader but also enhances its global competitiveness. The increasing internet penetration rate, coupled with substantial investments, creates an environment conducive to attracting foreign talent and fostering innovation.
As Saudi Arabia continues on its trajectory of ICT development, the global community is likely to witness the Kingdom’s emergence as a key player in the technology landscape. The strides made in infrastructure, connectivity, and digital services lay a strong foundation for sustained growth and technological leadership on the international stage.
