A 17-year-old boy, Philip Emmanuel, has confessed to the brutal murder of his boss, Mrs. Adene Iyabode Deborah, in a shocking crime that has left the Ondo community reeling.
Emmanuel, who worked as a cook for the victim, revealed that he conspired with his accomplice, Precious, a recently employed driver, to carry out the heinous act after learning about a modest sum of money in her bank account.
The gruesome details of the crime, including the stabbing and beheading of Mrs. Adene, have brought to light the dangers of misplaced trust and the tragic consequences of greed.
The deceased, a well-known caterer in her community, was found dead inside her apartment after being missing for several days.
Her body, which bore multiple stab wounds and had been decapitated, was discovered in what police describe as a crime of opportunity fueled by financial desperation.
The suspects, both teenagers, were paraded at the Ondo Police headquarters, where they recounted their roles in the crime that has shocked the neighbourhood.
Philip Emmanuel, who had been employed by Mrs. Adene for five months, described how Precious, a driver who had only been with the victim for two months, convinced him to participate in the crime.
According to Emmanuel, Precious overheard that N150,000 had been deposited into Mrs. Adene’s bank account and saw this as a chance to exploit the situation.
“I am here because I killed my madam. I worked with her for five months as her cook. She had just employed a driver, Precious, who had only been with her for two weeks,” Emmanuel stated.
“One day, Precious came to me and said that N150,000 had just been deposited into my madam’s account.
He suggested we kill her to take the money. I was hesitant and told him I had never killed anyone before.”
Emmanuel continued, detailing the events leading up to the murder: “On the day of the crime, my madam asked me to come and help her wash clothes because she was feeling tired.
Precious also showed up, which surprised her, but he claimed he wanted to help out. Precious had brought a drink, which he gave to me. After I drank it, he pulled out a cutlass and began threatening me, saying he would kill me too if I didn’t comply.
We entered the house, and he pushed me inside. Under duress, I struck her with the cutlass, but then I started crying.”
Following the murder, the two teenagers checked Mrs. Adene’s account, only to find that there was N60,000 instead of the expected N150,000.
Precious took N30,000 and gave the other half to Emmanuel. The young cook then fled to Idanre, believing he could escape the consequences of their crime.
Ondo State Police Commissioner, Oladipo Abayomi, who addressed the press during the parade of the suspects, described Philip Emmanuel as a trusted employee who had betrayed his employer in the most horrific way.
Commissioner Abayomi highlighted the need for caution when discussing financial matters, especially in the presence of employees or individuals who might misuse such information for their own gain.
“This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers of sharing sensitive financial information carelessly, particularly around those whose character and intentions may not be fully known,” Commissioner Abayomi said.
“It is important for everyone to exercise discretion and remain vigilant in their interactions with others, especially when it involves money.”
The Commissioner also praised the investigative efforts that led to the swift apprehension of the suspects, noting that the police were committed to ensuring that justice would be served.
He assured the public that the suspects would face the full wrath of the law once investigations were completed.
The community, still in shock over the brutal nature of the crime, has expressed deep sadness and anger over the senseless loss of Mrs. Adene, who was described by neighbours as kind-hearted and generous.
Her death has not only robbed her family of a beloved member but has also sent ripples of fear throughout the area, as residents grapple with the reality that such violence could occur within their midst.
The case also underscores the broader issues of youth involvement in violent crime and the influence of peer pressure among young people.
The apparent ease with which Emmanuel was coerced into participating in such a brutal act has raised questions about the moral compass of today’s youth and the societal factors that may contribute to such behaviour.
In the wake of the murder, community leaders and law enforcement officials are calling for greater awareness and intervention programmes aimed at young people, stressing the need for better guidance and support systems to prevent such tragic events from recurring.
As the investigation continues, the community hopes for a resolution that not only brings justice for Mrs. Adene but also serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of greed, betrayal, and misplaced trust.
The death of Mrs. Adene Iyabode Deborah is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unforeseen dangers that can arise from those we least expect.
