Fear and uncertainty grip Kano as the government of Abba Kabir Yusuf prepares to arraign the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of the State, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, over allegations of financial misappropriation.
Reports indicate that some residents are planning to leave their homes due to concerns of potential violence by political thugs in the state.
Charges were filed against Ganduje, his wife, and six others by the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)-led administration in the state at the Kano State High Court last Tuesday.
The government had also launched a commission of inquiry and litigation against Ganduje over alleged abuse of office.
The impending litigation has sparked intense political discussions on local radio stations and social media, with many residents expressing apprehension that the situation may escalate into a security breach given the deep-seated animosity between the feuding parties.
Residents like Yakubu Isa and Tanimu Auwalu have advised for caution and focus on governance, highlighting the need for the government to prioritize development over political vendettas.
Hajiya Ayi Isa Dosa urged the governor to resist distractions, emphasizing that voters will judge based on tangible achievements rather than political skirmishes.
However, APC stalwarts like Garba Kore and Alhaji Musa Iliyasu Kwankwaso have criticized the governor’s actions, warning against political witch-hunts and advocating for fairness in any probe.
In response, the Kano chapter of the APC, through Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, emphasized the party’s commitment to lawfulness but warned against persecution.
The police in Kano assured residents of safety, with Commissioner of Police Ussaini Gumel stating that the city is secure, and the police are not involved in preparing charges against the former governor.
He advised the state government to clarify the situation through the Attorney General.
