That law enforcement agents occasionally take advantage of their status as uniformed men to oppress unsuspecting citizens is not news. Little wonder Nigerian musicians have passionately condemned the unethical practice, calling on the government to scrap the Special Anti Robbery Squad arm of the Nigeria Police Force.
In a series of tweets on social media, top musicians including Don Jazzy, Olamide, Simi, Falz, Reekado Banks, Dremo, Jon Ogah, DJ Spinall, Sam Klef, Tjan, Lil Kesh among others, called on the federal government to scrap the SARS unit of the Police Force as a result of their excesses.
“Over 100,000 tweets from concerned Nigerians. The people don’t feel protected. If we cannot fix SARS then end SARS”, Don Jazzy lamented.
3M singer, Simi, recounted her recent bitter experience with the now dreaded police unit. “People are not supposed to be afraid of the people that are supposed to be looking after us. A couple of weeks ago, at almost midnight, my friends and I had a gun pointed at us for laughing. Take guns away from trigger happy people who hide behind the uniform”, end SARS”, she wrote.
