Begging is now a crime in Nigeria, when done using people living with disabilities.
This came after the Senate and the House of Representatives harmonized bill passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly.
According to the bill, those found guilty of the act will be liable to a six-month imprisonment, among other punishments.
The bill contains provisions that would ensure that the disabled are protected from discrimination and harmful treatment; have access to free education at all levels, basic health care, and employment, among others.
The harmonized bill will take into account, the challenges being faced by physically challenged persons and direct more focus at them, creating a National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, which will be headed by a physically challenged person.
The lawmakers have passed the bill to President Goodluck Jonathan for assent.
