The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Chukwu stated that such a move would immortalize Tinubu’s name in the annals of Nigerian history.
Chukwu made this statement on Friday while welcoming Tinubu to the South-East ahead of his official visit to Enugu State scheduled for Saturday.

He expressed optimism over what he described as the Federal Government’s gradual change in attitude towards the Igbo nation under Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement issued by Ohanaeze spokesman Alex Ogbonnia, Chukwu said: “It is therefore hoped that with the Enugu visit, President Tinubu will write his name with gold in the hearts of Ndigbo and all well-meaning Nigerians if he orders the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
The apex Igbo socio-cultural group emphasized that national peace, unity, patriotism, and sustainable economic development can only thrive in a society built on equity and social justice.
“In other words, there is hardly any society or group that can be complacent under severe existential threats such as orchestrated marginalization, relative deprivations, and external instigation of insecurity, conflagrations, and crises,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze also lauded Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State for his innovative leadership and significant infrastructural strides, including projects such as the Enugu International Conference Centre, Smart Schools, hospitals, and the resuscitation of industries like Hotel Presidential Enugu, Flour Mills, and Nigergas.
Similarly, the group commended Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, for installing night landing equipment at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, describing it as a “life-saving” intervention.
The statement concluded with warm wishes for President Tinubu’s visit: “We wish President Tinubu a safe, joyous, and eventful trip as he is treated with Igbo hospitality in Enugu State.”
