The immediate previous governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has remarked that Nigeria’s leadership should be based on merit and not on entitlement.
On Sunday, at the presentation of Professor Ishaq Akintola’s autobiography and retirement programme at Lagos State University (LASU), El-Rufai made these remarks.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Akintola, who is also the founder of Muslim Rights Concerns (MURIC), retired from LASU after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

President Tinubu’s administration got off to a strong start, and El-Rufai, who was the keynote speaker and awardee, said that this has weakened the opposition to the same faith ticket.
He argued that leadership should be based on merit rather than entitlement because of the speed with which the current administration in Abuja is making positive changes for the general welfare of the Nigerian people.
If we want to create a society free of discrimination based on race, religion, or ideology, we must put less emphasis on these factors.
“As members of the two major religious groups in the country, if we find ourselves in public positions, we should ensure that we practise the basic principles of leadership as encapsulated in both religions.”
