A devastating fire that broke out on Tuesday night in Namoda Township, Zamfara State, has claimed the lives of 17 almajiris, leaving the community in mourning.
The victims were laid to rest in a solemn funeral ceremony on Wednesday.
The fire reportedly started in a house adjacent to the almajiri boarding school and quickly spread to the children’s residence, trapping them inside.

Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Eyewitness Account
A witness, Yahaya Mahi, described the horrific scene, stating that although initial efforts managed to contain the fire, it reignited at the entrance of the children’s quarters, blocking their escape.
“It started again right at the entrance, preventing them from getting out,” Mahi recounted, confirming that 17 children lost their lives, while 12 others suffered injuries.
Grief and Calls for Action
One grieving parent, speaking to the BBC, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.
“We left it to God. Our hearts were broken when we heard the news, but we pray that such an incident never happens again,” the parent said.
The incident has sparked urgent concerns about safety standards in informal boarding schools, with growing calls for immediate measures to prevent future tragedies.
