Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denounced Russia’s early morning missile and drone attack on energy facilities across Ukraine.
Zelensky, writing on his social media handle, stated that more than 50 missiles and 20 drones were used in the attack, which targeted seven regions across the country.
The attack occurred on a major national holiday commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War Two.

Zelensky drew parallels between the German invasion of the Soviet Union and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime as “Moscow Nazis.”
Russia’s defence ministry claimed that its attacks were in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy facilities. However, Ukraine has accused Russia of targeting its power plants since the start of winter in 2022.
The latest campaign, which began in March, has led to rolling blackouts in several regions of Ukraine.
DTEK, Ukraine’s largest energy provider, reported that at least three thermal power plants were seriously damaged in Wednesday’s attack, the fifth on the company’s facilities in seven weeks.
Despite the damage, DTEK’s teams are working to restore power, although 80% of its generating capacity has been affected. DTEK’s Chief Executive, Maxim Timchenko, stated, “The energy these power stations produce allows millions of Ukrainians to live with dignity.
We will not stop working to restore power at our facilities.”
Ukraine’s energy ministry warned of potential limitations to energy supply for industrial consumers between 18:00 and 23:00 as a result of the damage.
The situation remains tense as Ukraine continues to face Russian aggression, particularly targeting its critical energy infrastructure.
