GENEVA, Switzerland, April 16, 2015/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The UN Committee against Torture is due to review the Republic of the Congo on 22 and 23 April in sessions that will be webcast live.
The Republic of the Congo is one of the 157 States parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and is required to undergo regular examinations of its record before the Committee of 10 independent experts.
The Committee will engage in a dialogue with the government delegation and also hear from NGOs.
Public sessions: 10:00-12:00 (09:00-11:00 in Brazzaville) on 22 April, 15:00-17:00 (14:00-16:00) on 23 April

Among the possible issues to be discussed: Measures to prevent and address torture in all places of deprivation of liberty; respect of procedural safeguards and fundamental guarantees; effective investigations and access to legal remedies for victims of torture; arbitrary detention; prison overcrowding; excessive use of force during recent police operations and principle of non-refoulement.

A news conference is scheduled for 12:30 on Friday 15 May at Palais des Nations in Geneva when the Committee will discuss its concluding observations on the Republic of the Congo and the other countries being reviewed – New Zealand, Romania, Luxembourg, Spain, Colombia, Serbia, and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
