Infostride News Uncovers Alarming $7 Trillion Annual Investments in Nature-Damaging Activities, says UNEP
In a groundbreaking report released by the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), it has been revealed that a staggering $7 trillion is funneled annually by both public and private institutions into activities that bear detrimental consequences for the environment.
The report, titled “State of Finance for Nature 2023,” sheds light on the fact that these investments constitute approximately 7% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Despite this, the document points out that nature-based solutions continue to be globally underfunded, with current annual public and private investments in this sector totaling a mere $200 billion. According to the report, meeting climate, biodiversity, and restoration goals will necessitate a tripling of finance flows by 2030 and a quadrupling by 2050.

In a dire statement, the report underscores, “For the first time, this edition estimates the scale of nature-negative finance flows from both public and private sector sources globally. The figure is daunting – almost US$7 trillion per year – and is likely to be an underestimate given it includes only direct impacts.”
Private sector activities that contribute to environmental harm receive a substantial $5 trillion in investments, whereas investments in nature-based solutions languish at a mere $35 billion, underscoring a massive disparity.
The report identifies the top five industries accountable for the majority of negative financial flows as construction, electric utilities, real estate, oil and gas, and food and tobacco.
Niki Mardas, Executive Director of Global Canopy, expressed concern about the findings, stating, “This year’s report is a stark reminder that continuing with ‘business as usual’ poses a severe threat to our planet, reinforcing the urgent need for a transition to sustainable business practices and to stop the financing of nature destruction.”
The report further notes that government investment in environmentally harmful subsidies has surged by 55% since 2022, reaching a substantial $1.7 trillion.
Environmental Impacts and Unchecked Activities
The UNEP report issues a stark warning about the unchecked harmful activities and their impact on the environment. It emphasizes that without substantial commitments backed by adequate funding, greenhouse gas emissions will escalate, leading to a rise in temperatures and affecting numerous regions by 2070.
Specifically, the report predicts that areas affected by warmer weather conditions will surge from the current 0.8% of the world’s landmass to approximately 19% by 2070, impacting up to 3 billion people. The potential economic fallout from this scenario could cost the world between 11% and 14% of its GDP by 2050 if the current trajectory of environmental degradation continues unabated.
The report grimly states, “By 2070, these conditions could spread to 19% of global land areas, potentially affecting over 3 billion people (Xu et al. 2020) and leading to mass involuntary migration and serious socio-economic upheaval.”
In light of these revelations, Infostride News echoes the urgent call for a paradigm shift towards sustainable practices and a cessation of financial support for activities that contribute to the destruction of our planet.
