According to a US official familiar with the matter, as reported by NBC News on Tuesday, a US soldier is said to have been captured by North Korea after crossing the border from South Korea.
According to US officials, the incident is still “fluid,” and tensions are rising over North Korea’s nuclear programme as they gather information.
Unauthorised US national who was on an orientation tour crossed the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), according to the American-led UN Command.

They claimed in a tweet that they think the person is now being held in North Korean custody and that they are coordinating with their counterparts to find a solution.
Unauthorised crossing of the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) was committed by a U.S. citizen on a JSA orientation tour. We think the DPRK is holding him right now, and we’re working with the KPA to put an end to this situation.
The specifics of the incident and the national who crossed the border’s identity are yet unclear.
The unidentified individual was taking part in a tour of the joint security area (JSA), which is a section of the demilitarised zone between the two nations. Since the 1960s, private businesses have been in charge of organising these tours. Additionally, the United Nations organises its own tours for its employees.
Due to its proximity to Seoul, the capital of South Korea, barely 30 miles to the north, the JSA has enormous historical significance. The armistice that ended the Korean War was signed in this place in 1953.
As the USS Kentucky, a nuclear-powered submarine, arrived at the Busan naval base in South Korea, tensions continued to rise. The United States’ extended deterrence assurance and unshakable commitment to the Republic of Korea are demonstrated by this port visit, US Forces Korea underscored.
In response to North Korea’s nuclear threats, South Korea and the US officials met on Tuesday in Seoul to discuss ways to improve their respective countries’ deterrence capacities.
The Nuclear Consultative Group was established by US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to explore collaborative operations and exchange information on nuclear and strategic weapons operating plans.
