According to reports in The Sun, Man Utd may
already have their first summer signing in the bag,
with the £10m signing of the so-called ‘Dutch
Ronaldo’, Memphis Depay, looking very likely to
happen. Depay is a goalscoring winger for PSV
Eindhoven – which is probably how he’s earned the
comparison to the Madrid legend – who has for
many years seemed poised to finally step up and
prove himself at a bigger club, and Louis van Gaal,
who knows Depay from his time as coach of Holland,
is a known admirer of his talents.
Where Depay would slot into Van Gaal’s side is
another matter, with Man Utd already suffering from
an embarrassment of riches in attack, following the
big-money signings of Juan Mata, Angel di Maria and
Radamel Falcao. For a relatively small outlay of
£10m, Depay would look to be a largely risk-free
signing for Man Utd; however, Depay could very well
be more of a Mateja Kezman than a Luis Suarez in
emulating his Eredivisie goal exploits. Who knows?
In a few years, he could even be the Dutch Wilfried
Zaha.
