Ashley Young is of the opinion that the controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will fail unless match officials drastically cut the time taken to make decisions in games, the Manchester United defender said.
And Young was involved in another high-profile VAR incident earlier this month when Juan Mata was judged to be offside from the full-back’s cross when scoring in the FA Cup win at Huddersfield.
“For me, it’s one of those things where I don’t know whether it is taking something away [from the game] — the waiting around to find out the decisions,” Young said. “It can be too long and it can be frustrating.
“But it is one of those things — if the system comes in and it starts getting better, then I think it can work.
“It is just when you’ve having to wait for one minute 40 seconds, or two minutes, whatever it is.
“And if [the system] is going away and constantly asking, asking, asking, I’m not sure it is going to work if that is going to be the case.
“But as long as they nail it down and shorten the time needed to make decisions, I’m sure it can help.”
