Voter apathy characterized the local government elections held on Saturday across the 18 local government areas of Ondo State, with polling units witnessing scant participation from residents.
Our correspondent observed that polling units in Akure South and Akure North Local Government Areas were largely deserted, with electoral officials and security personnel idle, waiting for voters.
At Ward 4, Unit 7, Ojumu, Akure South, where 922 voters were registered, only 96 had cast their votes by 11:00 am, with no other voters in sight. Similarly, many other polling units recorded minimal turnout.

However, Ward 9, Unit 3, Oba-Ile, saw slightly higher activity, reportedly due to the presence of a councillorship candidate from the unit.
Despite the police-imposed restriction on vehicular movement, compliance was low as motorists, especially those in transit through the state, moved freely.
Many streets were filled with youths playing football, while commercial motorcyclists took advantage of the situation to make brisk business.
The poor turnout raises concerns about the effectiveness of the electoral process in engaging citizens at the grassroots level.
Observers have attributed the apathy to a lack of awareness, disinterest in local politics, and dissatisfaction with governance.
