Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, has said he would compel members of the state executive council to give out Zakkat and endowment to the less-privileged out of their God-given wealth.
Wamakko stated this at the weekend in Gandi town, Rabah local government area of the state, during the distribution of Zakkat collected in the Gandi District.
According to him, all members of the council, whose wealth qualified for the payment of Zakkat, would be made to give it out to the less privileged in the society.
“I will give this directive to all the Commissioners, Special Advisers and the Secretary to the state government, among others during the next State Executive Council meeting. Those whose wealth has not qualified for the payment of Zakkat will be made to give out endowments,” Wamakko pledged.
He maintained that God endowed some people with various forms of wealth not only for themselves and their families. Therefore, wealthy individuals and other privileged persons must imbibe the culture of assisting others who are less privileged.
He stated that the state government spends over N77 million monthly through the state Zakkat and Endowment Committee to assist orphans and the less privileged members of the society. He added that the money was being spent monthly in the free treatment of indigent patients and the payment of monthly allowances to physically challenged persons in the state.
