Rooney is probably the most obvious departure, given his poor form and huge salary. The England international still has two years remaining on his current deal, so he might be keen to cling on, knowing that only a move to China would allow him to earn anything close to his current wage.
However, with Rooney approaching the end of his career, he’s unlikely to accept another season spent warming the bench and will be eased out of the club with the goal-scoring record under his belt. That frees up around another £200,000 a week for United to bring in a player who can justify so much money.
