Wayne RooneyWayne Rooney has undergone a medical ahead of his proposed return to Everton from Manchester United, sources have said.

Rooney, 31, was at the Finch Farm training ground on Saturday, as the move back to his boyhood club 13 years after leaving for Old Trafford draws closer.

The news comes on the same day United announced that a deal has been agreed on to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku for £75 million, subject to the Belgium striker passing a medical and agreeing to personal terms. The two transfers are being conducted separately.

Rooney signed for United in 2004 from Everton as an 18-year-old in a £25.6m deal.

He went on to score 253 goals in 559 appearances, winning the Premier League title five times.

In January, he scored his 250th goal for United to break the record set by Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney, fifth on United’s all-time list of appearance makers, also won the Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and three League Cups during 13 seasons at United.

He was appointed club captain by former manager LVG in 2014 following Nemanja Vidic’s departure to Inter Milan.
