The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) claims it is not aware of the death of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in last Saturday’s gubernatorial election in Kogi state, Prince Abubakar Audu.
According to reports, APC is yet to officially inform INEC or make any request as to whether to be granted some days to conduct a fresh primary to pick a new candidate, or to now adopt its running mate in the polls, James Faleke as its substantive candidate or even to demand an outright cancellation of the elections.
The electoral body said it heard the news of Audu’s passing just like most other Nigerians. Nevertheless, INEC said it was studying the situation with a view to coming up with an appropriate position that would be fair, lawful and acceptable to all.
Director in charge of Voter Education, Publicity, Civil Society and Gender Liaison at the Commission, Mr Oluwole Osaze-Uzi told Vanguard that INEC would make its position public as soon as the issue is addressed.
