The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned Nigerians about the existing fake Facebook account being fraudulently posed as an official one run by the commission.
The electoral body said that the page ‘INEC Nigeria Online’ is being used to invite people to apply online for the Permanent Voter Card (PVC).
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Rotimi Oyekanmi they stated that the commission has not commenced online registration and warned unsuspecting Nigerians to not fall prey to fraudsters.
The statement read, “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wishes to inform the general public that it is not in any way associated with a Facebook page called “INEC Nigeria Online,” with the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) https://www.facebook.com/INEC-Nigeria-Online-1211576328987773/?ref=br_rs.
“Some unknown persons opened this Facebook platform with all intents and purposes to lure unsuspecting Nigerians into believing that they can apply online for the Permanent Voter Card (PVC).
“The Commission hereby reiterates that it has not begun online registration of Nigerians for the purpose of obtaining the PVC, neither has it authorised any organisation, group or individual to do so.”
The commission’s only verified official account on Facebook is ‘INEC Nigeria’.
