Members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly yesterday attributed their failure to resume sitting almost a week after their recess ended to alleged threats to their lives.
Recall that the two-month long recess by the House ended on August 4, but the lawmakers, who are mostly members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are yet to resume sitting.
Speaking with Daily Trust on the matter, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Mohammed Baba Ibaku (PDP, Udege/Loko) said: “The House is not sitting; we have chosen not to sit and we will sit only when we feel like it”.
Ibaku, who said the Assembly directed the Clerk of the House, Mr. Ego Mai-Keffi, to write the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Idris Ibrahim, informing him about their resumption from recess, added that members cannot resume sitting if their safety is not guaranteed.
“There were gunshots around my house in Nasarawa yesterday (Monday). Our lives are under threat. The policemen in my house repelled the gunmen”, he said.
On the failed move to impeach Governor Tanko Al-Makura, Baba Ibaku, who was among the 20 lawmakers that signed the impeachment notice, said that they have not jettisoned the cause.
“The 20 lawmakers are still together and are pursuing a common cause”, he said.
Reacting to the lawmaker’s claim, the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Umaru Ismaila, said his office did not receive any report on the alleged exchange of gunfire at Ibaku’s residence just as he added that he is not aware of any threat to the lives of lawmakers.
ASP Ismaila added that the state Assembly complex has a police outpost stationed there to provide security for members.
