Psychology Today describes addiction as ‘a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that are pleasurable but continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities…’ Apart from your wallet, pocket guide, handbag, pen, and handkerchief which other phone can you leave without? So many things. Obviously, you can’t leave without your phone! That your smarphone you cannot afford to lose sight off as this immediately throws you off balance.
And for once, that is why I call you an addict.
Not sure of my proposition on how phone use has a way of turning people into addicts, here are five scenarios that demonstrate addict traits:
Pinging while Biking; the sight of losing a thread of communication has seriously foisted the stigma of pinging while the bike is on speed for phone users these days. Many people find it difficult to drop their WhatsApp conversation of BBM chats with their lovers or friends while still on the bike with the Okada man rolling through the bumpy roads
Music addicts; for these you see the earpiece constantly plugged to the ears. Despite the precaution to the use of earpiece and how it affects the ear, even while sleeping many phone users these days cannot afford to remove the Nike earpiece from the ear listening to the rage of sound protruding from the little chips they have plugged to the ear. As this has health demerit as such, it is also an addict trait.
Eating-Browsing; this is a habit that has developed overtime. The trait of constantly getting your eyes to the screengrab, and getting yourself completely soaked in the cyberworld is an addictive habit that should be removed. Apart from the time consumption this takes, it has also a way to losing the interest on the meal on the table.
