The World Health Organization, has today commemorate the World Pneumonia Day. WHO has identified pneumonia as an acute respiratory disease that affects the lungs.
WHO stated in a post on their page that pneumonia is the cause of 12% deaths among children below 5 years of age. The World Health Organization further stated that about 258 children die daily in Nigeria of pneumonia.
According to the World Health Organization, pneumonia and other respiratory disease are more prevalent in the Northern part of the country than other part of the country.
Pneumonia is caused by varying factor such as air pollution, child wasting, short gestation, ambient particulate matter etc. WHO however gave guidelines to prevent pneumonia which includes regular immunization, maintain environmental sanitation, and ensure that they have access to clean air.
The World Health Organization in collaboration with UNICEF, has initiated a global action plan for pneumonia and diarrhea with a motive to control pneumonia especially in children.
