BARCELONA, SPAIN–(Marketwired – Feb 24, 2014) – Mobile World CONGRESS — Wilocity, the leading developer of 60 GHz multi-gigabit wireless chipsets based on the IEEE 802.11ad standard, today announced the Wil6300 chipset, the world’s first 802.11ad, multi-gigabit Wi-Fi chipset for mobile phones. The new chipset will give phone users 4.6 Gbps interference-free bandwidth, over 10 times faster than current best-of-breed mobile Wi-Fi, and greatly improve network capacity. These massive improvements to both speed and network capacity will fundamentally change the way people use their mobile devices today, by providing near instantaneous access to the cloud, media upload and download, and allow for paradigm-changing cellular network offload.
Wilocity was the first company to ship 802.11ad products to the PC market and has shipped more than a million units since introduction in February, 2013. Wilocity is once again leading the industry, by bringing multi-gigabit, interference-free, network capacity boost to the mobile phone market.
There continues to be an insatiable appetite for instantaneous, anytime and anywhere network access. Juniper Research has recently estimated that 60 percent of mobile phone traffic will be offloaded to Wi-Fi networks by 2017, so capacity is a key need for mobile carriers, especially in crowded locations with many heavy users of mobile data. Additionally, mobile applications such as 4K video streaming, media kiosk downloads, and personal cloud services, are driving the industry to find new alternatives to existing connectivity options. 802.11ad is the newest generation of Wi-Fi technology and is fully supported by the Wi-Fi Alliance through their WiGig certification program.
“The huge performance boost offered by 802.11ad, operating in the 60 GHz band, combined with massive demand growth for Wi-Fi, makes this a natural fit for mobile phone users,” said Tal Tamir, co-founder and CEO, Wilocity. “802.11ad will fundamentally change the way people use their mobile phone to access, view and share their personal media.”
In order to fit nearly 5Gbps into the power and real-estate of mobile platforms, Wilocity developed an advanced 28 nanometer (nm) chipset with significant reduction in power consumption and size, both critical for mobile platforms. Power use is expected in the 200-300 mW range for streaming video and other typical user scenarios, with idle power consumption < 1mW when 802.11ad is not in use.
Prototypes of the new chipset will be shown at Mobile World Congress, Feb. 24 – 27, at Hall 2, Booth G50. The new chipset will be available for sampling in Q3, 2014.
