Young Thug shared a brief snippet of his upcoming project Barter 7 on his Instagram story.
Thug announced that he was planning to release the album, sharing a photo of disgraced comedian Bill Cosby surrounded by women. The name is a continuation in his series of trollish releases that needle Lil Wayne. The rapper made the decision to name his debut mixtape for a major label Barter 6 way back in 2015, when the feud-cum-legal-battle between Birdman and Lil Wayne was at its peak. Although Thug said that he considers Wayne an “idol” at the time, it was hard not to read disrespect into the title at a time that Wayne was fighting to free his fifth Carter album.
Now that Tha Carter V has finally dropped, Thug is back at it. He shared the news of Barter 7 on the same day that Wayne’s long-awaited album made it into the world. The snatch of a song Thug shared is just as ambiguous as that initial feud. We can clearly hear a vocal that says “I think my idol is a hater,” which could be a reference to the two rapper’s earlier back-and-forth with Wayne or the Birdman diss track “Idols Become Rivals.” The track has its roots in a Thug song that leaked earlier this year, but there is no indication if any changes have been made to the track since then. He definitely has more to talk about, considering that he’s being investigated in a 2015 shooting of Wayne’s tour bus.
But predicting what Thug is going to do is a fool’s errand. Nothing is a given in the delightfully weird world of a rapper who once wanted to be called No, My Name Is Jeffery. Seriously.
