COPENHAGEN (Youth Development Ministry Report) – The Minister of Youth Development, Boni Haruna has reiterated the commitment of Nigerian Government to full implementation of the Junior Professional Officers (JPO) Programme, citing numerous benefits that would accrue to the beneficiaries and the country’s developmental efforts.
Boni Haruna disclosed this while discussing the modalities for facilitating the proactive implementation of the programme during the meeting held with officials of the United Nations Development Programme at the JPO Service Centre in Copenhagen, Denmark recently.
The Minister expressed confidence over the value of the programme, saying Nigeria’s participation in the JPO Programme will allow young Nigerian talents to share their knowledge, so that the UNDP and all partner agencies could benefit from the human capital. He added that the Nigerian JPO Programme will strongly contribute to building national capacity for leadership and international engagements by young Nigerians country-wide.
While speaking on the successes attained by the Government under the Technical Aid Corps Programme, the Minister averred that the programme has been a frontier implored by the Government to diversify the utilization of the potentials of its large young population for overall national development. Deliberating on the timeline and the process of JPO recruitment, he explained that Government has already provided funds for the commencement of the process. He indicated readiness to create awareness and understanding of the programme, pledging to enhance States participation in the programme.
The Deputy Director of the UNDP Office of Human Resources, Kun Vee Lee in his talk at the welcome meeting for the Minister congratulated the leadership in Nigeria for joining the UNDP JPO Programme as the first African country, thereby showcasing the potential in African young talents and commitment to promoting UN values.
“The JPO Programme offers an excellent framework for supporting the UNDP and all participating organisations’ activities in specific countries of interest to Nigeria. It also contributes to the post 2015 agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.
