Abuja (Federal Ministry of Youth Development Report) – The Federal Ministry of Youth Development has organized a two-day anti-corruption education and sensitization workshop for all staff with the aim of sensitizing them on the need to fight corruption in the Ministry.
Speaking at the opening session of the workshop in Abuja on Thursday September 25, 2014, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Henry Akpan (Dr) represented by the Director of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Waziri Laminu stated that the establishment of the Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit in the Ministry was a major strategy of government to promote the entrenchment of a solid moral foundation among public servants which has degenerated over the years.
He stated further that the task of curbing corruption is enormous, expressing hope that with the cooperation of all and sundry, it will be surmountable. He also charged the staff to participate actively in the workshop as the knowledge that would be gained would be of immediate and immense benefit to this generation and future generations of Nigerians.
Explaining the rationale for the education and enlightenment workshop, the Chairman of ICPC, Ekpo Nta, who was represented at the workshop by the Head of the Monitoring and Evaluation Department, Gaji Barnabas Baba stated that the approach to fighting corruption logically begins from a determination to ensure that the culture of corruption, especially in public service gives way to a culture of integrity.
“We believe that any strategy which ignores the entrenchment of these values will not endure. Not only does the Commission strives to re-awaken public officers to the virtues of integrity, it also strives to educate them about the conducts that constitute corruption under the law. This is crucial if every act of corruption in government is reported and investigated,” he said.
