The Nigerian Government has charged all unlicensed Private Employment Agencies (PEAs) to regularize their operations with the Ministry of Labour and Productivity or face penalty according to the Labour Law.

The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu disclosed this in Abuja recently during the ministry’s collaboration with stakeholders, adding that a national workshop on ‘Strengthening the Role of Private Employment Agencies (PEAS) in Human Resources Development’ has been slated to hold from April 2 – 3, 2014 at the Conference Hall of the NECA House in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to him, the Ministry in collaboration with the Human Capacity Providers Association of Nigeria (HUCAPA) will be hosting the national workshop as part of efforts to achieve the objectives of the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for the labour and employment sectors of the national economy.
Emeka Wogu pointed out that in addition to reducing the incidences of unfair labour practices, the workshop was geared towards strengthening relations with all Private Employment Agencies (PEAs) as well as promoting productivity and decent work. He listed other objectives of the workshop such as addressing the emerging trends and challenges in the recruitment industry and providing a platform for interaction between regulators, operators of recruiters’ licenses
and applicants.
The Labour Minister further revealed that the workshop was being organized in accordance with the mandate of the Ministry on the licensing of qualified companies such as those providing security services to enable them operate as labour contractors and Private Employment Agencies in line with the provisions of sections 23, 24, 25 and 71 of the Labour Act, CAP L1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
He said that the social partners identified below have been invited to participate in the workshop programme to hold daily
from 9.00 am: the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), International Labour Organization (ILO), all Private Employment Agencies (PEAs), Insurance Companies and other stakeholders.
