TSL and NCS Team Up to Perfect the Art of Inventory Management

Recently, a customer approached NCS with a request to develop a new inventory system for managing their entire corporate artwork collection worldwide. NCS rose to the challenge, delivering a comprehensive solution that closed gaps in the inventory process, streamlined hardware interactions and provided a more intuitive and functional user interface (UI). This innovative solution is now available to other NCS customers as well.

The customer’s previous solution involved complicated, proprietary software running on both a Windows CE-based RFID reader and a laptop PC. Complex cabling was required for data uploads, the online database was difficult to navigate, and the process lacked proper auditing capabilities. The entire solution was unwieldy and difficult to use, making for a laborious, time-intensive process.

Using TSL’s free software development kit (SDK), NCS developed a simple iOS application that can run on either an iPod or iPhone, communicating with the RFID reader via Bluetooth^®. An intuitive UI displays artwork thumbnails, and audio/visual indications provide immediate feedback for scanned, missing or incorrect inventory results. A useful web-based tool provides inventory management and reporting capabilities.

With NCS’ iOS software and the 1128 Bluetooth^® UHF RFID Reader, the customer can quickly and easily assign identification numbers to artwork, perform inventory scans for any location throughout their global offices, replace defective RFID tags on-the-fly when walking the floor, and wirelessly sync those results with the master database. Using local data storage, the inventory process can stop or resume at the user’s discretion, and database sync operations can be delayed when there is no Internet connectivity.
