Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Barrister Silas Onu, has officially resigned his membership of the party, citing internal interference and leadership crisis as reasons for his departure.
Onu, who was the PDP’s senatorial candidate for the Ebonyi South Zone in the February 4, 2024 bye-election, has now declared his allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — the new platform being adopted by a coalition of opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a resignation letter dated Wednesday and addressed to his Obiozara Ward Chairman, Onu announced his decision to part ways with the PDP, encouraging his supporters to follow him into the ADC for what he described as “a better political future.”

A copy of the letter was obtained by our correspondent on Thursday.
“It is with a heavy heart, yet for a more patriotic reason, that I am resigning my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read in part.
Recalling his years of active participation in the party, Onu said he made significant contributions to the growth of the PDP at the grassroots level. He also served as State Publicity Secretary and later as State Chairman, a position from which he played a key role in party mobilisation in Ebonyi State.
He expressed appreciation for the support he received during his time in the PDP and during his senatorial candidacy.
“Additionally, I was graciously elected as the candidate of the party for the Ebonyi South Senatorial Bye-election in February 2024. Therefore, this decision didn’t come easily,” he stated.
Onu attributed his exit to persistent interference in the party’s affairs by some serving governors, which he said created “irreconcilable differences.”
“Due to some irreconcilable differences, especially the role being played by a few sitting governors of the party, I am compelled to pursue my political aspirations from a different, but more stable platform,” he said.
He concluded his letter by calling on his political allies and followers to join him in building a formidable political movement under the ADC.
“I thank you for your unflinching support throughout my membership of the PDP and pray that we can all journey into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to continue forging a strong political movement for the overall good of our people,” the letter added.
Onu’s defection marks another high-profile loss for the PDP as the newly formed coalition under the ADC umbrella continues to gain momentum in the lead-up to 2027.
