Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has directed the immediate employment of children of deceased servicemen in the state as part of measures to support families of fallen heroes.
The directive was issued on Thursday during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony held at the Government House in Port Harcourt, marking activities for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
According to the governor, the decision underscores the commitment of the Rivers State Government to the welfare of the Armed Forces, other security agencies, and the families of personnel who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

Fubara instructed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Benibo Anabraba, to ensure the prompt implementation of the employment directive.
“I want to mention here that in line with our support, the Secretary to the State Government has been given a marching order to ensure that the employment promised by the State Government for the children of our veterans would be immediately attended to.
“This is part of our way of showing socio-economic support to the families,” the governor said.
He assured that the state would continue to collaborate with military formations operating within Rivers by providing logistical and welfare support to enhance their operational capacity.
The governor also acknowledged the sacrifices of Nigerian troops deployed across the country, particularly those engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the North-East against Boko Haram and other extremist groups.
He further recognised the efforts of security personnel tackling banditry and kidnapping in the North-West and North-Central regions, as well as military operations in the South-East and South-South aimed at curbing pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft and other security threats.
Fubara paid tribute to soldiers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, various international peacekeeping missions and recent internal security operations.
He also commended President Bola Tinubu for initiatives targeted at strengthening the Armed Forces, including improved welfare packages, acquisition of modern equipment and measures to address internal security challenges.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Rivers State chapter, Kuu Aminkipo Promise, lauded the state government for its sustained support to veterans and their families.
Promise also highlighted the launch of the 2026 Emblem Appeal Fund, during which Governor Fubara donated N100 million, describing the gesture as reassuring to veterans, widows and dependents of fallen servicemen.
