Abia State House of Assembly says that it cannot fold its arms and watch revenue Agents misapply laws enacted by it and thereby portray the state Government in bad light.
Speaking during a public hearing in Aba South Local Government Headquarters on 27th November, 2013, the speaker Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu reassured Abians of its avowed commitment to protect their rights and privileges at all times from unscrupulous Revenue Agents who’ shortchange both the Government and its citizens through their illegal and nefarious tax collection activities.
Hon Chukwu called on Abians to voluntarily pay their taxes and provide information that will lead to the prosecution of such high handed revenue agent’s inorder to improve the living conditions of the citizenry.
Hon. Chukwu further stated that the 5th Abia House of Assembly Members will continue to defend democratic values and practices in the interest of good governance, fairness and equity coupled with the protection of human rights and values which it has sworn to uphold its sanctity.
In their separate presentations, the chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Aba. Zone, Mr. Chidozie Ogunji, Chairman of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Prince Okey Ufomba, Coalition of Importers of Nigeria Aba, Mayor Ikwechegh, Landlords Association of Nigeria, Michael Otuechere Moses, Nigerian Medical Association Aba Zone, Dr. Kingsley Enweremmadu, Alhaji Musa Iheakaram of the Muslim Community Aba and other speakers called for the restructuring of Tax collection to fit into the civilized order rather than the arbitrary use of force, intimidation an d outright impunity as being witnessed in Aba in particular and Abia State in general.
