Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, has criticized the invasion of the Oyo State House of Assembly in Ibadan by suspected Yoruba nation agitators, describing the act as not in the interest of the Yoruba people.
In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Comrade Jare Ajayi, the organization emphasized that those who carried out the invasion did not represent the true interests of the Yoruba people.
The invasion, which occurred on Saturday, saw individuals claiming to be Yoruba nation agitators declaring the creation of a purported ‘Democratic Republic of the Yoruba’ separate from Nigeria.
Afenifere clarified in its statement that there is no such entity as the Democratic Republic of Yoruba, highlighting that the Yoruba people are an integral part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Ajayi stated, “Yoruba is an important component of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. And as is well known, there cannot be a sovereign republic within an extant sovereign republic.”
While acknowledging the existing challenges in Nigeria’s governance structure, Afenifere emphasized that violent divisions were not the solution.
The organization expressed confidence in the restructuring efforts of the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stating that restructuring is key to addressing the country’s shortcomings and ensuring a better future for all citizens.
Afenifere reiterated its commitment to the agitation for restructuring, emphasizing that allowing regions to have control over their affairs would lead to a more beneficial Nigeria for everyone.
