Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has identified poverty and lack of economic opportunities as the major causes of insecurity in northern Nigeria.
In a statement released on Saturday and made available to the media, Mumuni emphasized the need for a multi-faceted approach to address the issue.
According to Mumuni, the government must focus on investing in economic development projects, creating jobs, and ensuring infrastructural improvements to combat insecurity effectively.

Abayomi further suggested the introduction of social reforms, strengthening of security forces, community engagement, and empowerment of women and youth in the region.
Mumuni highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of insecurity, stating that poverty and lack of economic opportunities have contributed significantly to the problem. He emphasized the need for the government to invest in economic development projects, job creation initiatives, and improvements in infrastructure to alleviate poverty and reduce the likelihood of individuals turning to violence.
Furthermore, Mumuni underscored the importance of social reforms, including addressing social inequalities, promoting social cohesion, and fighting discrimination.
He suggested empowering marginalized communities, promoting interfaith dialogue, and addressing issues of land disputes and resource-sharing.
In terms of security, Mumuni emphasized the need to enhance the capacity and professionalism of security forces in northern Nigeria.
This includes providing training, equipment, and support to law enforcement agencies, as well as ensuring accountability and respect for human rights in their operations.
Additionally, Mumuni stressed the importance of community engagement, highlighting the need to build trust between communities and security forces.
He suggested implementing community policing initiatives, dialogue forums, and conflict resolution mechanisms to foster cooperation and understanding between different groups.
Countering extremism was also a key point in Mumuni’s statement. He emphasized the need for programs that address the root causes of radicalization, provide alternative narratives, and promote tolerance and respect for diversity to prevent individuals from joining extremist groups.
Lastly, Mumuni emphasized the importance of empowering women and youth in northern Nigeria.
He highlighted the role of women and youth in promoting peace and stability and suggested empowering them through education, economic opportunities, and leadership roles.
In conclusion, Mumuni emphasized that addressing insecurity in northern Nigeria requires a comprehensive approach that combines security, economic, social, and governance strategies.
He emphasized the importance of tackling the root causes of insecurity, promoting sustainable development, and fostering inclusive and peaceful societies to ensure the safety and prosperity of all individuals in the region.
