Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have set up a trust fund to cater for families of those who died in the Monday bombing of a motor park in Nyanya, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The governors, under the aegis of the APC Governors’ Forum, who yesterday visited the injured in hospitals in Abuja where they are being treated, also called on President Goodluck Jonathan to deploy state resources to fish out those behind the attack.
The governors, led by Chairman of the forum and Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, described the deaths resulting from the blast as a killing too many.
Briefing reporters after the visit, Okorocha expressed sadness that such a calamity could befall Nigeria at this time, adding that no nation could survive under such atmosphere of insecurity.
“For the Nyanya incident, we in the APC Governors’ Forum join millions of Nigerians to condemn these unruly acts which do not do our nation any good. At this moment, our hearts go out to those who lost their loved ones. We know that they must be in serious pains; what happened was rather unfortunate and we can only say that this is one killing too many.”
According to him, in a bid to support the bereaved families, members of the forum, who had earlier met in Abuja, had decided to establish a trust fund.
He therefore urged the president to investigate the incident, saying: “We want Mr. President to show leadership at this moment and do all within his capacity and capabilities as a president to fish out those who were involved. We urge all Nigerians to take courage and fight this common evil”
“Our nation has experienced increasing loss of life and almost on a daily basis we hear one ugly story or the other about loss of life. And just as we are talking about what happened in Nyanya, a few hours ago or few days ago, we also learnt about 100 young girls kidnapped; some records say it is 200. A nation cannot live like that”, Okorocha said.
He however urged Nigerians to remain calm and prayerful, adding, “We believe that as leaders, this is not the time to say who is wrong or who is right but this is the time that we must all close ranks to ensure the safety of lives and property. This is not the time to play politics with peoples’ lives.”
Other governors on the entourage were Mr. Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Alhaji Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Senator Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Dr. Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa) and Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).
