Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Abia State University Uturu have decided to suspend their strike, just seven days after initiating the industrial action.
The union made this decision during an emergency congress held at the university’s main campus in Uturu, where academic staff unanimously resolved to return to their teaching duties.
Confirming the development, Dr. Chidi Slessor Mba, the chairman of ASUU at the university, stated that Governor Alex Otti has demonstrated commitment to addressing the union’s demands.
These demands primarily revolve around the payment of 11-month salary arrears and other related issues.
Governor Otti has invited ASUU for a dialogue, which has instilled confidence in the union that their demands will be met soon.
In response to the news, some students who had returned from the Christmas and New Year holidays expressed relief, noting that the suspension of the strike would prevent disruptions to their academic calendar.
This decision comes after Mba Ukariwo, the chairman of the Governing Council of Abia State University, had appealed to ASUU members to end the strike and engage in dialogue to address their grievances.
