Dani Alves was back at Camp Nou on Tuesday for the first time since leaving Barcelona on a free transfer last summer, where he said a lot of things would have to change for him to ever consider returning to the club on a permanent basis. Jamie Vardy said he and his Leicester teammates could be proud after they gave everything in their unsuccessful bid to prolong the club’s Champions League campaign on Tuesday night. The England striker scored as the Foxes drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in their quarterfinal second-leg match at the King Power Stadium — but bowed out on aggregate after Antoine Griezmann’s penalty separated the teams in the Spanish capital last week. Vardy told BT Sport afterwards: “We’ve given our all, especially in the second half. They made a few blocks on the line which on another day would’ve gone in. “We…
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone admitted his team were “living in fear” of Leicester City before advancing to the Champions League semifinals on Tuesday night. The Spanish club led 1-0 from the first leg in Spain and Saul Niguez’s first-halfgoal at the King Power Stadium meant Leicester would need to score three to progress. And though Jamie Vardy got one back on the hour mark, Atletico held off their Premier League opposition. It was the end of a fairytale run for Leicester, and Simeone said Atletico were never able to relax against them over the two legs. “I’m full of…

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 100 goals in the Champions League when he netted a hat trick against Bayern Munich on Tuesday — then used the occasion to ask for more respect from fans. Ronaldo had cut an isolated figure up front for long periods, and was jeered by some home fans for not working hard enough off the ball. At one point he put his finger to his lips, appearing to attempt to shush the Bernabeu. But they were all cheering his name at the end after he had knocked home the goals…
Bayern Munich won the battle 2-1 in 90 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu, but lost the war 4-2 after extra time, suffering a bitter 6-3 aggregate defeat to a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Real Madrid side. After a goalless but highly entertaining first half, Carlo Ancelotti’s side valiantly secured an extra half-hour with a 2-1 win in normal time to level the tie at 3-3 overall, courtesy of a penalty from Robert Lewandowski on 53 minutes and a slapstick Sergio Ramos own goal — 102 seconds after Ronaldo headed an equaliser with 14 minutes remaining. However, just like in the 2-1 defeat…
Bayern Munich’s preparations for the first leg were thrown into chaos when it emerged that a shoulder injury would keep out Robert Lewandowski, their prolific striker from Poland. Although Thomas Muller is hardly a disastrous replacement, he endured a poor match in Munich and was substituted by Carlo Ancelotti even at a stage when Bayern were behind and chasing the game. Lewandowski will return at the Santiago Bernabeu, however, and this will be a perfect demonstration of quite how transformative his presence can be. With him up top, Bayern are better in so many ways — they can play more…
