Manchester United seldom lose members of staff they want to keep but, when one of their best coaches receives the offer of a first-team managerial role at another club, it’s almost impossible to stop them leaving. Carlos Queiroz, for example, was hardly going to turn down Real Madrid in 2003. The most recent departure, albeit in less exalted circumstances, was Warren Joyce, who left his long-term role as reserve/under-21/under 23 manager to take charge at Championship side Wigan Athletic in November. The former Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End, Plymouth Argyle, Burnley and Hull City midfielder spent 12 years with United…

Luis Enrique doesn’t usually give an opinion on cup draws which haven’t taken place, but on Thursday, smiling after his Barcelona side had beaten Real Sociedad 5-2, he broke one of his own rules. “Of course I would like a Barca-Celta Vigo final,” he admitted in his postgame news conference after the Blaugrana had reached the Copa del Rey semifinal. What he didn’t admit, though, was that he probably would have preferred to avoid Atletico Madrid. Instead, that is exactly what his Barca side got, with Celta paired with the unfancied Alaves. At least his dream of a May final…

After a fine start to the season, Liverpool have struggled in recent weeks. Since the start of 2017, Jurgen Klopp’s side have won just one of seven games in all competitions and that lone victory came against League Two side Plymouth Argyle. Fixture congestion appears to have taken a toll on a stretched Anfield squad, as has the departure of Sadio Mane to the African Nations Cup: Liverpool have scored just four goals in six games without the Senegalese forward. With all that said, Klopp’s side remain fourth in the Premier League, just two points off second place. Will they…
