Eight suspected Boko Haram fighters were today killed in Gombe and Bauchi states, northeast Nigeria, police, residents and local hunters said. According to reports, gunmen believed to be Islamist militants have been roaming Bauchi and neighbouring Gombe since the weekend. More than 20 people were reportedly killed in Gombe by the gunmen while about four deaths were recorded in Bauchi. The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has released the list of broadcasting stations that breached the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting code from the beginning of electioneering campaign to date, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. The governments of the United States and United Kingdom have warned against “deliberate political interference” in the collation of the March 28 presidential election results in Nigeria. The Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Suleiman, on Sunday picked holes with the conduct of Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections in Kwara State. Suleiman, who spoke to reporters in Ilorin, the state capital, alleged electoral irregularities in the state, saying it was “an electoral tragedy”. A coalition of human rights, non-governmental and civil society organizations, Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has said it will provide independent verification of the official results as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). “If official results fall within TMG’s estimated range, stakeholders should have confidence that the results announced are accurate,” the group said. TMG has been monitoring Nigeria’s ongoing elections through 4,000 citizen observers deployed across the country. Resident Electoral Commissioner in Yobe, Habu Zarma, on Sunday said the electoral commission, INEC, had postponed elections indefinitely in 18 polling units in Geidam Local Government Area of the state due to security challenges.
