In a distressing incident, ten students from the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State were abducted by bandits in the early hours of Thursday, near the Gandu village, approximately two kilometers from the university.
A resident of the area, requesting anonymity, informed reporters that the assailants, armed and numbering several, raided the student community opposite the university’s permanent location around 2 a.m. on Thursday.
The attackers discharged firearms into the air, causing panic among the students who fled for safety. The entire operation spanned approximately two hours, as per a local insider.
When addressing the media in Lafia regarding the incident, Abubakar Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer of the University, stated that the exact number of abducted students had not been determined yet.
He explained, “It is too early to ascertain the exact number of students because those affected are not living within the school but off campus.”
In response to the abduction, university students initiated a peaceful protest, demanding an end to the recurring kidnapping incidents targeting their colleagues.
It is crucial to note that university student abductions have become alarmingly frequent in recent years.
Despite the state government’s and security agencies’ efforts to prevent further attacks on the institution, the kidnappers have persisted in their actions.
The state Police command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, stated that the details of the kidnapping are still sketchy at this time.
