The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has declared that the era of bank robberies in Lagos State is a thing of the past.
Speaking at the 18th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Security organized by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund on Thursday, Egbetokun disclosed that only one bank robbery has been successful in the state since 2007.
“There was a time that armed robbery and bank robbery were common in Lagos, but I can recall that since 2007 till date, only one bank robbery succeeded in Lagos, and that was as far back as 2014. So, the days of armed robbery and bank robbery are gone,” he said.

Egbetokun commended the Lagos State government for its continuous support of the police, emphasizing that such assistance has played a vital role in ensuring the state’s security.
“What we are doing here today is the usual assistance that the state government has been giving to the police in the state.
Without the assistance that the police receive from the government, we would not be able to do the much we are doing in Lagos State. We would have been overwhelmed with insecurity in Lagos State,” he added.
The IGP also noted that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic hub, experiences a high level of internal migration, with thousands of people arriving daily, which poses significant security challenges.
To address these challenges, Egbetokun stressed the need for the police to continuously adapt and strengthen their security strategies to maintain safety in the state.
