Police operatives in Bauchi State have arrested five individuals, including a female suspect, for their involvement in the theft and sale of tricycles stolen from Kano State.
The arrests were made following a coordinated operation by the State Intelligence Department, which acted on credible information regarding the illicit activities of the suspects.
The police have successfully recovered seven stolen tricycles, locally known as “Keke Napep,” that had been sold within Bauchi.
In a statement released on Tuesday, SP Ahmed Wakil, the Spokesperson for the Bauchi Police Command, identified the female suspect as Maryam Ibrahim.
She is accused of receiving and selling the stolen tricycles in Bauchi, thus playing a key role in the criminal operation.
According to the police, Maryam conspired with four male accomplices: Adamu Sale (30), Umar Ibrahim (31), Nasiru Usman (29), and Nasiru Musa Umar (27).
Each suspect hails from different parts of Bauchi, and together, they orchestrated the theft and distribution of the stolen tricycles.
The investigation into the theft ring revealed that the suspects had established a network for receiving, transporting, and selling stolen tricycles.
Maryam Ibrahim, in particular, was responsible for selling the tricycles, effectively serving as the conduit through which the stolen goods entered the local market.
Her role was critical, as she facilitated the movement of the stolen tricycles from Kano to Bauchi, where they were sold to unsuspecting buyers.
The police suspect that the operation had been ongoing for some time, given the number of tricycles recovered and the organised manner in which the suspects operated.
The breakthrough in the case came as a result of detailed intelligence work by the State Intelligence Department, which meticulously gathered information on the suspects’ activities.
Acting on this intelligence, the police were able to track down the suspects and intercept the stolen tricycles.
The successful recovery of the seven tricycles not only highlights the effectiveness of the police operation but also underscores the importance of community cooperation and timely intelligence in tackling crime.
SP Ahmed Wakil emphasised the seriousness of the offence, stating that receiving stolen property is a significant crime under Nigerian law.
“Receiving stolen property is a serious criminal offence under Section 427 of the Criminal Code Act, which can lead to a prison sentence of up to 14 years,” Wakil noted.
This law is intended to deter individuals from participating in the sale or purchase of stolen goods, thereby disrupting the market for stolen items and reducing overall crime rates.
Wakil further warned that the police are committed to cracking down on such criminal activities and will not hesitate to bring offenders to justice.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities, stressing that the success of law enforcement efforts depends heavily on community support and collaboration.
The suspects are currently in police custody and will remain there until the investigation is concluded.
Once the investigation is finalised, they will be charged in court to face the full weight of the law.
The police have reassured the public that justice will be served and that all legal avenues will be pursued to ensure the suspects are held accountable for their actions.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the broader issue of tricycle theft, which has been a persistent problem in many parts of Nigeria. Tricycles, often used for commercial transportation, are a valuable target for thieves due to their high demand and ease of resale.
The theft and resale of tricycles not only affect the owners and operators who depend on them for their livelihoods but also undermine public confidence in local security.
In response to this incident, the Bauchi Police Command has reiterated its commitment to enhancing security measures and cracking down on organised crime.
The command is working closely with other state police departments to dismantle similar theft rings and prevent stolen vehicles from being trafficked across state lines.
By intensifying patrols, improving intelligence-sharing, and fostering community partnerships, the police aim to create a safer environment for all residents.
The arrests of Maryam Ibrahim and her accomplices mark a significant step forward in the fight against organised theft in Bauchi.
As the police continue their investigation, they remain vigilant in their pursuit of justice, determined to ensure that those who seek to profit from crime are brought to account.
The public is encouraged to support these efforts by remaining alert and reporting any suspicious activity, thereby playing an active role in safeguarding their communities.
